Find your next wildlife photograph

The table below lists all 27 documented wildlife species in Over the Hill, their areas and active times, including the dry conditions needed for Sasquatch and Saharan Cheetah. Use the Safari Camera to register each species in your Compendium; finding the same species in another area does not create an additional species entry.

Animal locations and sighting conditions

Choose an animal, then match its area and active period before heading out. Dry weather is an additional requirement wherever it appears in the conditions column. When using animal map markers, search around the marked location as well: an animal may move around its spawn point.

Check your area, clock and weather

Emerald Lake and Tassili n'Ajjer Desert are available from the start, while exit portals open later areas within their region. Choose an accessible area from your target's row before planning the drive. For an animal listed in several areas, pick the destination that best fits your current exploration.

Daytime runs from 05:00 to 20:00, and night runs from 20:00 to 05:00 on the game clock. Enable Show Time if you want to keep track while searching; it is off by default. Plan a night outing for night-only animals instead of repeatedly checking their locations during daylight.

Camping advances time and helps you skip unsuitable weather or lighting. Rest at a cabin or use the camping kit, then check the clock again before returning to your search. In co-op, bring every party member close before setting up camp.

The Cloud Clearing Bell changes the weather to Clear. Recheck both weather and time after arriving through a portal, because portal arrivals begin with random conditions. Loading a single-player save restores the area's saved time and weather, so check those conditions before resuming a photo hunt.

How to photograph an animal for the Compendium

  1. Open the Compendium from the radial menu and note the species you still want to photograph. Choose a target from the table and check its area, active period and any listed weather requirement.
  2. Open the radial menu with Q on keyboard, right stick press on an Xbox controller or R3 on a PlayStation controller, then select the Safari Camera.
  3. Approach quietly and leave room to line up the shot. Land animals notice a vehicle within 15 m, and the horn alerts ground animals within 30 m; flying birds and fish are excluded from that horn response.
  4. Center the animal and keep scenery out of the way. Adjust your distance so the subject is neither too close nor too far; the Safari Camera detects animals up to 100 m away.
  5. Watch the target indicator before taking the photograph. Players describe green for an undiscovered animal, orange for an already discovered animal and grey when the camera has not acquired a valid subject.
  6. Take the photograph once the animal is recognized, then check the Compendium for the discovery. A repeat photograph of the same animal lets you choose which picture to keep.
05

When an animal is missing or a photo does not register

  • Check that you are using the Safari Camera from the radial menu. Free-camera Photo Mode, accessed from the pause menu or a scenic point, is a separate camera and does not replace wildlife registration.
  • If the target indicator stays grey, reposition and adjust your distance. Keep the animal centered and unobstructed, then check for a valid target again before taking another photograph.
  • If an animal is absent from a mapped location, compare the current conditions with its table row and try another mapped point for that species. Search nearby too, because animals may move around their spawn locations.

Species completion and first-photo rewards

The wildlife collection contains 27 documented species across the released areas. An area listing tells you where to search for a species; it does not turn that animal into a different species entry. Use the Compendium to identify your remaining discoveries instead of adding together every appearance in the location table.

The first photograph of each species pays Pebbles: Common animals give 10 to 20, Uncommon animals give 20, Rare animals give 50 and Legendary animals give 100. These are first-photo rewards, so revisiting another area for the same species does not create another first discovery. Completing a region's wildlife compendium unlocks the Naturalist achievement and gives no additional Pebbles or items.

Compendium discoveries and saved pictures

Check the in-game Compendium to see which wildlife photographs have registered. To find pictures you want to keep or share, open Extras from the main menu and use its screenshots-folder option. Steam screenshots are managed separately, so use the Compendium itself when deciding which animal to search for next.
