Das Rust Ox Unlock Location
Unlock Das Rust Ox by completing Waddington Scree Trail in Gimli Ridge, in The Valhallas - Canada. Your first completion awards the vehicle and a one-time reward of 40 Pebbles.
Reach Gimli Ridge and Complete the Unlock Trail
- Reach Ferry to the Ridge in Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake is available from the start, and reaching this exit portal opens Gimli Ridge.
- Travel through Ferry to the Ridge to enter Gimli Ridge at Ferry to the Mountain. When travelling with friends, bring everyone close to the portal so the group can pass through.
- Complete Waddington Scree Trail in Gimli Ridge to earn Das Rust Ox. The challenge has nine checkpoints, approximately 355 metres of mapped route and 70 metres of ascent.
- Choose Das Rust Ox at the Mechanic after unlocking it. This is where you can switch vehicles, select tools, buy upgrades and customize your ride.
Waddington Scree Trail also pays 8 Pebbles on every completion, including the first, alongside its one-time reward of 40 Pebbles. The vehicle unlock itself does not repeat. If you enjoy the route and can finish it reliably, returning to it can help fund your Rust Ox upgrades.
Prepare Your Vehicle Before the Attempt
Before attempting the trail, visit a discovered cabin to repair your vehicle and restore equipped tools. Cabins also reveal nearby points of interest and provide fast travel options. Check your loadout at the Mechanic so the equipment you intend to use is on the vehicle.
Engage Low Range when your vehicle struggles on rough terrain or slopes, then return to High Range on regular ground for speed. The default range control is Tab on keyboard, X on an Xbox controller and Square on a PlayStation controller. If you get stuck, aim the camera toward a suitable tree or use the manual winch to select the vehicle attachment point and anchor yourself.
Workhorse Strengths and Limitations
| Option | Value |
|---|---|
| Vehicle class | Workhorse |
| Mass | 2,800 kg |
| Base speed limit | 21.6 km/h |
| Winch pull | 44,000 N |
| Wheel radius | 0.36 metres |
| Suspension travel | 0.60 metres |
Das Rust Ox is a useful option for recovery tasks thanks to its stronger class winch. Its smaller wheels and lower speed are the tradeoffs to weigh against Expedition vehicles. Try it on familiar terrain before committing to a longer outing, and choose an approach that leaves room to recover if you get stuck.
Engine Tiers and Vehicle Comparisons
Engine upgrades raise Das Rust Ox's peak torque while its listed idle, peak and maximum RPM stay the same. Consider engine power alongside tires and recovery equipment when deciding what to buy next. If traction is the problem, try Low Range and a different approach before spending your entire budget on the engine.
| Engine Tier | Engine Values |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Idle: 700 RPM; peak: 3,000 RPM; maximum: 4,600 RPM; peak torque: 175 Nm. |
| Tier 2 | Idle: 700 RPM; peak: 3,000 RPM; maximum: 4,600 RPM; peak torque: 190 Nm. |
| Tier 3 | Idle: 700 RPM; peak: 3,000 RPM; maximum: 4,600 RPM; peak torque: 207 Nm. |
The Burro shares these listed engine figures at every tier. The Expedition vehicles Das Mammoth and The Marshal reach 256 Nm at their highest listed engine tier, compared with 207 Nm for Das Rust Ox. Weigh that torque comparison alongside the Rust Ox's recovery strengths and wheel size when choosing your vehicle.
Available Upgrades and Spending Priorities
The complete performance upgrade path for Das Rust Ox costs 675 Pebbles. Upgrades are bought for the selected vehicle, and each stage requires the preceding stage on that vehicle. Check which upgrades your Rust Ox already owns before spending, especially if you have just switched vehicles.
| Upgrade | Effect |
|---|---|
| Engine Stage 2 and Engine Stage 3 | Increase engine power and top speed. |
| Protection Stage 2 and Protection Stage 3 | Increase damage resistance. |
| Suspension Level 2 and Suspension Level 3 | Increase suspension height. |
| Tires Stage 2 and Tires Stage 3 | Increase tire grip. |
| Tool slot upgrades | Allow you to carry more tools. |
| Water Resistance 2 and Water Resistance 3 | Increase the water depth and time the engine can withstand before flooding. |
| Winch Stage 2, Winch Stage 3 and Winch Stage 4 | Increase the range of your winch. |
For recovery outings, consider winch range and tool capacity early. For rough ground, weigh tire grip and suspension height against the obstacle that is stopping you. Make each purchase solve a problem you have encountered, then reassess the vehicle before buying the next upgrade.
Customize Das Rust Ox and Unlock Liveries
Change Das Rust Ox's appearance at the Mechanic, where regular liveries are free. Its special livery targets are 50, 100, 150 and 200 km driven with Das Rust Ox. Keep using the vehicle on trips you enjoy to work toward those mileage targets while exploring.
Mileage for special liveries counts while at least one wheel touches the ground, in increments of 50 m. Use the odometer at the merchant to check how far you have driven with the vehicle. The display includes a decimal separator, so read the shown kilometres carefully when comparing your progress with a livery target.
