Complete El Kalaa North Ascent
Unlock Das Wombat in the released Over the Hill by completing El Kalaa North Ascent in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert, Algeria. The desert is available from the start, so you do not need to reach Aurès Mountains first.
Start in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert
Tassili n'Ajjer Desert is Algeria's starting area, and its starting cabin is Porte du Désert Camp. Use those names to orient yourself when choosing where to begin. Your destination is the challenge trail named El Kalaa North Ascent.
Check for North in the trail name before committing to an attempt. El Kalaa South Ascent awards The Woodman, while El Kalaa North Ascent awards Das Wombat. Keeping the reward in mind helps you choose the challenge that matches your goal.
Unlock and select Das Wombat
- Enter Tassili n'Ajjer Desert in Algeria to begin the unlock trip. This starting area gives you access to the region containing Das Wombat's challenge.
- Locate El Kalaa North Ascent in the desert. This is the named challenge trail you need to complete for Das Wombat.
- Finish El Kalaa North Ascent to unlock Das Wombat. Its first-clear rewards include the vehicle and 25 Pebbles.
- Select Das Wombat at the Mechanic after unlocking it. You can then choose its upgrades, customizations and equipped tools for your next outing.
Prepare for the ascent
El Kalaa North Ascent has 10 checkpoints, roughly 563 metres of mapped trail and 49 metres of ascent. Use those figures to judge the outing's scale when planning your trip. Leave yourself room to approach obstacles carefully.
Before an attempt, visit a cabin to repair your vehicle and restore its equipped tools. Cabins also reveal nearby points of interest and unlock fast travel points. Keep a discovered cabin in mind as a fallback if you become stuck and cannot recover.
If your vehicle struggles on slopes or rough terrain, engage Low Range for more traction. Switch back to High Range on regular terrain for speed. With default controls, Engage 4L/4H is Tab on keyboard, X on an Xbox controller or Square on a PlayStation controller.
Das Wombat's vehicle characteristics
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Vehicle category | Trail |
| Vehicle mass | 1,600 kg |
| Base speed limit | 27 km/h |
| Winch rating | 25,000 N |
| Wheel radius | 0.43 metres |
| Suspension travel | 0.55 metres |
| Chassis and axles | Ladder frame with solid axles |
Try Das Wombat on terrain you already know before spending heavily. Pay attention to whether you enjoy its handling and which obstacles interrupt your trips. Use that experience to choose an upgrade that addresses a problem you have actually encountered.
Compare the engine tiers
| Engine tier | Details |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 100 Nm peak torque; 750 idle RPM, 2750 peak RPM and 5000 maximum RPM. |
| Tier 2 | 106 Nm peak torque; 750 idle RPM, 2750 peak RPM and 5000 maximum RPM. |
| Tier 3 | 112 Nm peak torque; 750 idle RPM, 2750 peak RPM and 5000 maximum RPM. |
Engine Stage 2 and Engine Stage 3 are available for Das Wombat. Engine upgrades increase power and allow a higher top speed, while the listed idle, peak and maximum RPM remain unchanged across these tiers. Consider engine spending when you want more power, and weigh it against the grip or recovery improvements your outings need.
Choose upgrades around your next trip
Tire upgrades improve grip, while suspension upgrades increase suspension height. Consider these when planning rough-ground exploration. Choose between them according to the problem you want to address, then reassess the vehicle before buying more.
Winch upgrades increase the range of your winch, and tool-slot upgrades let you carry more tools. Consider range when useful anchors keep falling beyond your reach. Consider extra tool space when you want more equipment choices available during an outing.
Protection upgrades increase damage resistance, while Water Resistance upgrades increase the water depth and time the engine can withstand before flooding. Match those purchases to the trips you intend to take. Continue choosing crossings and approaches carefully after upgrading.
Budget for the Wombat you want to keep
Taking Das Wombat from stock to its maximum performance-upgrade stages costs 675 Pebbles. Upgrades belong to the vehicle you buy them for, and later stages require the preceding stage on that vehicle. Try the Wombat before committing your budget, especially if you are still deciding which vehicle to keep driving.
El Kalaa North Ascent also offers 5 Pebbles per repeat completion. The first post-launch update fixed missing Pebble payouts from subsequent challenge-trail completions, so repeat attempts can help fund upgrades. Choose a trail you can finish reliably if you want to keep earning while getting comfortable with your vehicle.
