Reveal the map and choose your next stop
- Open the map with M on the default keyboard controls, View on an Xbox controller or Create on a PlayStation controller to inspect your surroundings.
- Reach a cabin to reveal nearby points of interest, repair your vehicle, restore equipped tools and unlock another fast-travel destination.
- Pan around the map with W A S D on a keyboard or the left stick on a controller to inspect the surrounding area.
- Zoom with the mouse wheel or the controller's up and down D-pad controls to examine your intended destination more closely.
- Place a map pin with the left mouse button, A on an Xbox controller or Cross on a PlayStation controller to mark your next destination.
- Select a discovered cabin on the map to respawn there when you want to move quickly or cannot recover your vehicle.
Make cabins useful stopping points between longer drives. Reveal the surroundings, inspect the nearby objectives and choose a manageable destination before heading out again. Plan your approach around the terrain you can see, especially when a direct line would take you across difficult ground.
The Valhallas - Canada
Emerald Lake starts at Pavilion Lake Cabin. Its activities include Elizabeth Oath Trail, Hermit Trail, Windy Joe Trail and Elizabeth Lake Recovery. Pick an activity for your outing, then use nearby cabin discoveries to give yourself useful return options.
Gimli Ridge starts at Sunset Landing Cabin. Named activities include Bridal Veil Falls Climb, Waddington Scree Trail, Glasir Wood Recovery and Nerthus Marsh Recovery. Use the area table to keep its discoveries separate from the Emerald Lake objectives you have already visited.
Asgard Mountain starts at Shaughnessy Cabin. Its trails include Asulkan Lake Highline, Lower Midgar Trail and Midgar Ascent, while its item recoveries include Midgar Way Recovery and Upland Carmanah Recovery. Plan a focused outing around a named activity rather than trying to clear everything during your arrival trip.
Algeria
Tassili n'Ajjer Desert starts at Porte du Désert Camp. Its activities include Shabah Ascent, El Kalaa North Ascent, Chebka Gateway Recovery and Grand Oasis Recovery. If recoveries are your main interest, choose a named recovery before setting out so your trip has a clear goal.
Aurès Mountains starts at El Madraj Base Camp. Its activities include Kalaa Ulya Track, Ukhtayn Route, Jazira Ascent, High Mahrouqa Recovery and North Jazira Recovery. Keep this area's unfinished objectives together so returning from the desert does not leave you sorting through a mixed list.
Use portals to unlock and revisit areas
Reaching an exit portal for the first time opens its destination area. The arrival portal on the other side provides the return connection. When playing together, all players must be close to the portal before travelling through it.
- Reach Ferry to the Ridge in Emerald Lake to open Gimli Ridge; travelling through brings you to Ferry to the Mountain.
- Reach Tunnel to Asgard Mountain in Gimli Ridge to open Asgard Mountain; travelling through brings you to Tunnel to Gimli Ridge.
- Reach Tunnel to the Aurès Mountains in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert to open Aurès Mountains; travelling through brings you to Tunnel to the Desert.
Joining a multiplayer room in an area you have not unlocked can produce a restriction that prevents new areas being unlocked during that session. Your progress still saves in that situation. Plan a separate unlock trip from an area you already have available.
Keep regional completion easy to follow
- Keep Canada and Algeria in separate progress lists, with each area's unfinished activities beneath its name; the regions have separate starting selections and completion records.
- Record reaching a portal as an area unlock. Keep unfinished trails, recoveries and discoveries on your list for a later return trip.
- Tick off a trail or recovery after completing it, and keep repeat visits separate from your first completion notes.
- Use the Safari Camera for wildlife Compendium entries, centring an unobscured animal at a suitable distance before taking its photo.
- Treat meteorite hunts as repeat outings. A map marker identifies a possible spawn location and does not mean a meteorite is currently waiting there.
