Hermit Trail location and completion

Hermit Trail is in Emerald Lake, the starting Canadian area of Over the Hill. Find its start on the Emerald Lake interactive map, then follow the marked checkpoints to the finish to unlock The Burro and earn its first-completion reward of 40 Pebbles.

02

Find the start in Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake belongs to The Valhallas - Canada and is available from the start. Its starting cabin is Pavilion Lake Cabin. Use that name to orient yourself when planning your approach to Hermit Trail.

Identify the named Hermit Trail start on the Emerald Lake interactive map before driving toward it. Cabins reveal nearby points of interest and unlock fast travel when you reach them. If your surroundings are still unfamiliar, visit cabins as you explore and use the revealed map to plan your approach.

Open the Emerald Lake area guide and interactive map.

03

Prepare your vehicle for the climb

Hermit Trail has 31 checkpoints, approximately 1,610 metres of mapped route and 248 metres of ascent. Give yourself room to tackle the climb carefully. Focus on reaching each checkpoint with your vehicle under control.

Prepare your current vehicle at the Mechanic before heading to the start. Reaching the Mechanic fully repairs your vehicle, and the Tools menu lets you choose which equipment to carry. Check your equipped recovery tools before leaving so you know what you can use if the climb goes badly.

Low Range helps with traction on rough terrain and slopes, while High Range provides speed on regular ground. Keep the range control within easy reach before starting. Change your approach when an obstacle stops you, and avoid repeatedly forcing the same line.

Complete Hermit Trail and unlock The Burro

  1. Open the map to orient yourself before approaching the trail. The default map control is M on keyboard, View on an Xbox controller or Create on a PlayStation controller.
  2. Drive to the Hermit Trail start identified on the Emerald Lake interactive map. Use the named challenge start as your destination when planning the approach.
  3. Follow the marked checkpoints along Hermit Trail. Treat the next checkpoint as your immediate destination and choose a manageable line toward it.
  4. Switch to Low Range for steep sections or rough ground where you struggle for traction. The default Engage 4L/4H control is Tab on keyboard, X on an Xbox controller or Square on a PlayStation controller.
  5. Use the winch if you become stuck near a suitable anchor. Aim the camera toward the intended object; the quick winch targets the object closest to the centre of the camera.
  6. Continue through the marked checkpoints to the trail's finish. Completing Hermit Trail unlocks The Burro and awards its Pebble rewards.
  7. Visit the Mechanic to select The Burro after unlocking it. You can change vehicles, upgrade them and choose their equipment there.
05

Recover or restart a difficult attempt

If the quick winch selects an awkward anchor, try the manual winch for more control. Select an attachment point on your vehicle, then select the object you want to attach to. Consider the direction you want to move before committing to the pull.

If you overturn, an equipped jack can flip the vehicle upright and reposition it nearby. Open the radial menu and check Tools for it. If your tools cannot resolve the situation, selecting a discovered cabin on the map provides a way to respawn.

06

Vehicle unlock and repeat rewards

The Burro is the vehicle unlocked by completing Hermit Trail in Emerald Lake. It is a Workhorse-class vehicle with a cargo bed. Once you have unlocked it, try it at the Mechanic before deciding which vehicle you want to upgrade next.

Hermit Trail lists a first-completion reward of 40 Pebbles and a repeat reward of 8 Pebbles per completion. The vehicle unlock does not repeat. If subsequent finishes award no Pebbles, update the game before retrying: the first post-launch update fixed challenge trails failing to pay subsequent-completion rewards.
