What to Try When the Timeout Appears

For a Photon Cloud timeout in Over the Hill, update everyone's game, restart the game and Steam, then try a fresh lobby or a different host. If it keeps happening, compare players and rooms to decide whether to investigate the lobby, a local connection or a wider service problem.

Work Through the Connection Checks

  1. Update Over the Hill for every participant. If the game says the room uses a different game version, resolve that mismatch before retrying; the game's message specifically asks you to make sure your game is up to date.
  2. Restart the game and Steam. Retry the connection afterward and record whether the same timeout returns, giving you a result to compare with the original failure.
  3. Create a fresh room in the Server Browser for another connection attempt. Compare whether your group can join this lobby with what happened in the original room, keeping other changes to a minimum.
  4. Ask another player to host a test room. Compare the group's connection results with the original host to help decide which host or connection needs closer attention.

Separate Room, Player and Service Problems

Use the pattern of failures to choose your next check. These comparisons help narrow the investigation, but they do not establish the cause of the timeout by themselves.

  • If the original room fails but another room works, focus on the original lobby or host. Compare the results from the fresh room and different-host attempts before making further changes.
  • If only a particular player or host fails, test that connection's local network and firewall conditions separately. Compare the outcome after each check so you can identify which change affected the result; treat these as diagnostic checks, without assuming they will cure the timeout.
  • If everyone fails across multiple independent lobbies, investigate a wider service problem. Record which players and rooms were affected; that pattern gives you a reason to check beyond the original lobby, although it does not prove an outage.

Match Patch Fixes to the Actual Symptom

The October 16 update fixed server-list glitches when receiving an updated list. It also fixed clients loading endlessly when taking a portal after camping in the same session.

Those changes were not described as a general Photon Cloud timeout repair. Keep the symptoms distinct when troubleshooting: a room list that glitches, an endless load after portal travel, and a timeout while connecting need accurate descriptions.

  1. Use Refresh in the Server Browser if you need to reload the room list. Press R on keyboard, X on an Xbox controller or Square on a PlayStation controller; this refreshes the listing for your next connection attempt.

Prepare a Useful Report If It Continues

  1. Write down the exact error message and when it appears. Describe whether you were joining a room or had already been playing, and keep any portal-loading symptoms separate.
  2. Summarize your connection tests. Include which players could join, which rooms failed, whether changing the host helped, and whether updating or restarting changed the result.
  3. Open Feedback/Bug Report with Ctrl + F when you can access the game. Include your error description and test results so the report explains where the connection fails.
