Every Vehicle and Its Unlock

Over the Hill has 21 vehicles across Trail, Wagon, Workhorse and Expedition: The Ding, The Protector and The Trailrat are available from the start, and the remaining 18 unlock through challenge trails. The table below lists the complete roster with each vehicle’s class, required trail and unlock area.

What the Vehicle Classes Change

The class figures below compare base mass, speed limit and winch rating. Wagon has the highest listed speed limit, while Expedition has the strongest listed winch rating. Treat those as separate strengths when deciding what matters for your next outing.

ClassBase MassSpeed LimitWinch Rating
Trail1,600 kg27 km/h25 kN
Wagon2,000 kg28.8 km/h32 kN
Workhorse2,800 kg21.6 km/h44 kN
Expedition3,200 kg19.8 km/h51 kN

A heavier vehicle is not automatically the right choice for every trail. Wheel sizes, suspension travel and cargo beds vary between individual models, so class alone does not describe the whole vehicle. Use the class comparison to narrow your options, then consider the particular rig and the route you want to drive.

If lower base mass matters most to you, start by comparing the Trail vehicles. If you want a higher winch rating and accept a lower listed speed limit, consider Workhorse or Expedition. Try your shortlist on familiar ground before committing your upgrade budget.

Reach the Area for Your Next Unlock

  1. Start with the area in your chosen vehicle’s row. Emerald Lake and Tassili n'Ajjer Desert are open from the start, so you can pursue their vehicle rewards without opening another area first.
  2. For Gimli Ridge vehicles, find Ferry to the Ridge in Emerald Lake. Reaching this exit opens Gimli Ridge; travel through it to pursue the vehicle rewards listed for that area.
  3. For Asgard Mountain vehicles, find Tunnel to Asgard Mountain in Gimli Ridge. Reaching this exit opens Asgard Mountain, giving you access to the area containing those unlock trails.
  4. For Aurès Mountains vehicles, find Tunnel to the Aurès Mountains in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert. Reaching that exit opens Aurès Mountains; use your chosen vehicle’s row to identify the challenge trail you need there.
  5. Complete the named challenge trail to unlock its vehicle reward. Visit the Mechanic afterward to select your new rig, review its upgrades and choose the tools you want to bring.

Compare Steering, Suspension and Engine Tier

The Brick and The Marshal illustrate the differences behind the class labels. The Brick weighs 1,600 kg and has a maximum steering angle of 38° with 55 cm of suspension travel. The Marshal weighs 3,200 kg and has a maximum steering angle of 28° with 70 cm of suspension travel.

Engine tier also matters when comparing torque. At engine tier 3, The Brick has 112 Nm of peak torque and The Marshal has 256 Nm. Compare vehicles at matching upgrade stages, then weigh torque alongside mass, steering and suspension rather than using it as your only selection rule.

The post-launch update adjusted The Ding’s center of mass. Give it a fresh try in your current game before relying on older handling impressions. Use a familiar route so you can judge whether its behavior suits your driving.

Switch Rigs and Prepare for the Trail

  1. Visit the Mechanic and select a vehicle you own. You can also select the Mechanic’s icon on the area map as a respawn point, then change, upgrade or customize your rig there.
  2. Check that vehicle’s own upgrades before spending Pebbles. Each upgrade stage is purchased for a particular vehicle and requires the preceding stage on that vehicle, so plan your spending around the rig you intend to drive.
  3. Match upgrades to the problem you want to address. Tires increase grip, suspension upgrades increase suspension height, water resistance increases the depth and time the engine can withstand before flooding, and winch upgrades increase winch range.
  4. Use Low Range on rough terrain or uphill for more traction, then return to High Range on regular ground for speed. The default Engage 4L/4H input is Tab on keyboard, X on an Xbox controller or Square on a PlayStation controller.
