Start With Steam Input and Your Control Bindings

To troubleshoot a controller in Over the Hill, disconnect competing input devices, check that Steam recognizes your intended pad, and try the alternative Steam Input setting under the game's Properties → Controller menu. Restart the game after changing Steam Input, then retest and check the in-game bindings if the problem remains.

Disabling Steam Input has helped some players, but it is not a universal fix. Treat it as a test for your configuration rather than a setting every controller needs. Change a setting, check the result, and keep track of which configuration responds correctly.

02

Test Steam Input and Restore Default Bindings

  1. Disconnect other controllers or competing input devices. This lets you test the controller you intend to use on its own before changing its configuration.
  2. Check whether Steam recognizes your intended controller. If it does not, focus on getting the pad recognized before trying to correct individual game bindings.
  3. Open Steam Library → Over the Hill → Properties → Controller. This takes you to the game's Steam Input setting for the next test.
  4. Switch to the alternative Steam Input setting. If Steam Input is enabled, try disabling it; some players have reported success with that change, although the result depends on the configuration.
  5. Restart Over the Hill after the Steam Input change. You can then assess the controller after relaunching with the changed setting.
  6. Retest the input that was failing. Note whether it now responds correctly, remains unresponsive, or produces the wrong action so you can compare the result with the previous configuration.
  7. Inspect the affected action in the game's control settings. Checking its assigned binding gives you a specific input to correct instead of rebuilding the entire layout immediately.
  8. Use the reset-to-defaults control option if your installed build offers it. This gives you a default configuration to assess before creating custom Steam Input mappings.
  9. Retest the affected action with the default bindings. Use that result to decide whether you still need a custom mapping for the way you want to play.

Check What the Failing Button Should Do

For a driving check, the default steering input is the left stick on Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Accelerate uses RT on Xbox or R2 on PlayStation, while Brake/Reverse uses LT or L2. Handbrake uses D-pad right, so include that binding when comparing your layout with the defaults.

Ignition has no default controller button and is reached through the radial menu. Open that menu by pressing the right stick on Xbox or R3 on PlayStation. A missing direct Ignition binding therefore does not, by itself, mean the controller has stopped working.

Winch Action, Tools Menu, Photo Menu and Music Menu also have no default bindings. You can assign them in the control settings if you want direct shortcuts. Check for an empty binding before troubleshooting an expected shortcut as a failed button.

If you use Manual transmission, Shift Up uses RB on Xbox or R1 on PlayStation, and Shift Down uses LB or L1. Transmission is Automatic by default. Check your transmission setting alongside those bindings when investigating gear-change inputs.

04

Compare Sensitivity and Deadzone Settings

If steering responds but feels wrong, compare Steering Sensitivity and Steering Deadzone with their defaults. Steering Sensitivity defaults to 100%, and Steering Deadzone defaults to 5%. Use those values as a starting point for comparison before making further adjustments.

Throttle and brake have their own sensitivity and deadzone settings. Throttle Sensitivity and Brake Sensitivity default to 100%, while Throttle Deadzone and Brake Deadzone default to 5%. Inspect the settings for the affected input rather than changing steering settings for a trigger problem.

For camera movement that feels reversed, check Invert Y Axis and Invert X Axis. Both default to Off. Compare those options with the direction you expect before changing the camera bindings.

05

DualSense Support and Steering Wheel Expectations

Over the Hill lists full controller support on Steam, including DualShock and DualSense controller support. A DualSense belongs in the supported PlayStation-style gamepad troubleshooting path, although connection-specific problems can still occur. Start with recognition, Steam Input and bindings rather than assuming the controller type is excluded.

The developers prioritized keyboard and gamepad controls and did not plan steering-wheel or force-feedback support for the initial release. Keep that distinction in mind if you are troubleshooting a wheel. Use a supported gamepad when you want to compare your results with the game's controller mappings.

06

Report a Persistent Input Problem Clearly

If the problem persists, record your controller model, the affected action and what happens when you press its assigned input. Include which Steam Input setting you tested and whether default bindings changed the result. These details make the remaining problem easier to describe.

The default keyboard shortcut for Feedback/Bug Report is Ctrl + F. Use it to report the remaining input problem. Describe your test results and the exact action that still fails.
