Complete Hermit Trail to Unlock The Burro

Complete Hermit Trail in Emerald Lake to unlock The Burro in Over the Hill. Its first completion awards the vehicle together with 40 Pebbles, making Hermit Trail your destination for this early unlock.

02

Where to Find The Burro's Reward Trail

Hermit Trail is in Emerald Lake, the opening area of The Valhallas - Canada. Emerald Lake is available from the start, and its starting location is Pavilion Lake Cabin. Keep your search within this area when working toward The Burro.

Hermit Trail has 31 checkpoints, an approximately 1,610-metre mapped length and 248 metres of ascent. That makes it a substantial climb for an opening-area vehicle reward. Prepare your recovery options before committing to the attempt, especially if you are still learning how your starting vehicle handles rough ground.

03

Prepare Your Vehicle for Hermit Trail

Visit a discovered cabin before heading for the trail. Cabins repair your vehicle, restore equipped tools, reveal nearby points of interest and provide fast travel points. Use that stop to begin the attempt with your vehicle repaired and a familiar place to return to if the trip goes badly.

Choose your recovery equipment in the Mechanic's Tools menu, then access it through the radial menu while driving. A vehicle initially carries 1 tool, with Tool Slot upgrades increasing that capacity up to 4. Check your actual equipped loadout before leaving, and choose equipment for the problem you most often encounter.

For recovery, planks help with gaps and traction, while a jack can right an overturned vehicle. Prepare the winch as well: it gives you another option when driving alone cannot get the vehicle moving. Treat these as recovery choices for your attempt, and select what fits your available carrying capacity.

Unlock The Burro Step by Step

  1. Open the map in Emerald Lake to plan your approach to Hermit Trail. The default Open Map control is M on keyboard, View on an Xbox controller or Create on a PlayStation controller.
  2. Visit a discovered cabin before the attempt to repair your vehicle and restore equipped tools. This also leaves you with a known fast travel point to use if recovery becomes necessary.
  3. Engage Low Range when the climb or rough terrain makes your vehicle struggle. The default Engage 4L/4H control is Tab on keyboard, X on an Xbox controller or Square on a PlayStation controller.
  4. Complete Hermit Trail to receive The Burro and its first-completion Pebble reward. Finishing this named trail is the action that unlocks the vehicle.
  5. Select The Burro at the Mechanic after unlocking it to take your new vehicle out. The Mechanic lets you change vehicles, choose tools, purchase upgrades and customize your ride.
05

Recover From a Difficult Attempt

If your wheels spin or the vehicle struggles uphill, use Low Range and reassess your approach. Switch back to High Range on regular ground when you want more speed. Choose a manageable line through the terrain, and pause to reconsider an obstacle when repeated attempts leave you stuck.

If you need the winch, look for a suitable nearby anchor, such as a tree. The quick winch targets the object closest to the center of the camera. For finer control, use the manual winch to select an attachment point on your vehicle and then the object you want to attach to.

If the vehicle overturns, use an equipped jack to flip it upright and reposition it nearby. When tools are unavailable or recovery fails, open the map and select a discovered cabin to respawn. Once back, review your equipment before heading out for another attempt.

Your Reward and What to Do Next

The Burro is a Workhorse vehicle with a cargo bed, a weight of 2,800 kg and a 44,000 N winch. It gives you a different recovery profile from the starting Trail-class cars. Take a short drive after selecting it so you can get comfortable before committing to another long outing.

Hermit Trail lists 40 Pebbles as its one-time reward alongside The Burro, plus 8 Pebbles on every finish, including the first. Later completions continue to pay the repeat reward; the vehicle unlock itself does not repeat. Keep the trail in mind if you enjoy driving it and want more Pebbles for upgrades.

Upgrades are bought for individual vehicles, so budget separately when moving into The Burro. Use an initial drive to decide which problem deserves your next purchase. The Mechanic also lets you adjust its tools and customization before your next trip.
